 Episode 70 - Escape Drama

As soon as Lynn left Lorea's office, his face turned pale and he rushed out.

(Oh no. What should I do?)

He ran down the corridor with a gentlemanly gait, regardless of the fact that his clothes were in disarray.

(I've done something terrible.)

I didn't expect this to happen. As for Lynn, he never meant any harm.

But there is no excuse for that in this situation.

(I need to see Theo. He must explain to me why he did what he did and fix this situation.)

As Lynn reached the exit of the building, he heard the roar of a beast that sounded like it was coming from the depths of hell.

It was no doubt the roar of the Cerberus that Lorea had shown him earlier.

Lynn hurriedly opened the gate and ran out into the city.

He ran in a panic, not caring if he bumped into people passing by.

“Theo! Hey Theo!”

Lynn saw Theo riding in a carriage and called out to him as he ran.

The carriage was moving leisurely along the street towards the shopping district where the big merchants lined the streets.

He seemed to be going to some kind of business meeting.

“Hmm? Oh it’s Lynn. Gosha-san. Slow down a bit. Hey, Lynn. What's the matter? Why are you acting so crazy?”

Theo instructed the driver to match Lynn's running speed and run alongside him.

“Theo, you're terrible. You've been cold and dry in the past, but this time, this time, I have totally misjudged you. You're the worst. You're a jerk!”

“What's going on? Why are you so angry all of a sudden?”

“There's nothing to be done about it. You, you set me up to be a spy all along, knowing full well what would happen to me.”

“Huh? I thought you knew what you were doing?”

“What the hell?!”

“You said it yourself that you were working on a settlement. Hearing this, I immediately understood your true intentions. I thought you were trying to buy time by creating a false pretense of reconciliation. I was impressed by your resourcefulness and sacrifice, and the fact that you volunteered to be a spy to defuse the situation.......”

(How did you come to that conclusion?)

“You're lying. That's such an outlandish conclusion, that even Yuwen wouldn't make it. You definitely knew everything and did it with full conviction.”

“Hahahaha. Sorry, I apologize. But you know what they say. To deceive the enemy, you must start with your allies.”

Theo didn't look offended, in fact he was smiling like he was proud of it.

(Gosh, this guy's a demon.)

“Besides it is time to brace ourselves for an attack from Lorea. In spite of her flamboyant lifestyle, her finances are in shambles. Next week, the big merchants will stop doing business with her and she'll be out of control. We need to get out of Alfredo before the old lady gets angry and attacks us. I already have a hiding place.......”

“It's already too late. I thought I had just been invited to tea by Lorea-san, but then I was confronted with a letter suspending all business dealings and expelling her from the academy, and then I realized I was in trouble and ran out, but now I'm being chased by a magical beast she unleashed.”

“What?!”

Theo's face turned pale, as expected.

“Get in. Lynn.”

Theo reached out from the carriage, grabbed Lynn's hand, and pulled him up onto the carriage.

“Nonsense. According to our agreement with Illywia-san, we are supposed to set up Lorea next week. I'm sure she is yet to receive the letter from the big business association. And how come the head of the academy is ......?”

“I'm not sure if it's because I've never really met him before, but I've always thought that he's a good guy. He may have moved up his schedule a bit this time.”

“Damn it. She's a princess. I didn't calculate that. This is not how I planned to ......”

“G-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o.”

As soon as Theo let out a swear word, Cerberus' roar, which sounded like it was coming from the depths of hell, came from behind them.

Theo hurriedly turned to the coachman.

“Gosha-san. Change of destination. To the elevator terminal. Hurry. As fast as you can! We'll be eaten by a magical beast if we slow down!”

A carriage rumbles past a corner of Alfredo at an unusual speed.

“Get out of the way! Stop walking around like that. Clear the way. Do you want to die?”

The boy on the carriage, who looked like a delinquent, raised his voice and shouted abuse at the people on the street, forcing them to open the road.

“Whoa, that's dangerous!”

“Hey! What are you doing?”

People who were almost hit by the carriage or were exposed to the rising dust were shouting and swearing.

The people passing by frowned when they saw the boys riding in the carriage.

What the hell was that? They were driving through the city at that speed. They were insane, they seemed to think.

Then they looked behind them, and this time their faces turned pale.

A huge, three-headed dog with a blazing mane of fire was rushing towards them, making the ground shake!

Cerberus blows up the stalls and kicks the people in the street as it runs down the streets.

The flames of the mane burned everything it touched, spreading the damage wherever it went.

After Cerberus had passed by, the burnt out flowers, fruits and vegetables, store signs, and debris turned into a cruel burnt field, and the collateral damage left people rolling and cowering.

“Oh my God!”

“Kyaaaa!”

As soon as people saw Cerberus, they rushed to get out of the way or went inside the building and shut the door tightly.

Theo turned pale at the sight of it.

"It's a large magical beast ...... and it's on fire. I can't believe she let that thing loose in the city. What the hell was that crazy woman thinking?

“Theo. We can't go on like this. It'll catch up with us.”

In spite of his huge size, Cerberus was agile and faster than a horse running with a carriage on its back.

He was gradually closing the distance, and even though they were both sitting within the carriage, they could already feel the heat coming from his mane of flame.

“Hey. Can't you make it go any faster?”

“That's all I can do!”

As soon as Theo heard this, he threw their luggage on the street and started destroying the extra parts of the carriage with his wand.

“W-wait, sir?”

“I'll pay for it later. Right now, our lives depend on it. Lynn, take this.”

Theo threw a ring at Lynn.

Lynn climbed onto the back of the carriage and focused his mind on the ring.

(Remember. Remember what it felt like to defeat the Chimera. Please.)

A sword of light shot out from Lynn's ring and struck one of Cerberus' heads.

However, Cerberus did not fall or even cower under the sword of light, but rather the flames in his mane gained momentum and speed.

“ah, no way!”

“The Sword of Light is not working. Could it be that the magical beast can absorb magic power from the sword of light?”

Theo even cut the reins of the horse. The horse was released from the carriage and ran off in the opposite direction.

“Hey, sir!”

“I'll pay for it later. Lynn. Hold on tight. The wheel! Use the force of the wand to spin it. Spin it. Faster!”

Theo tapped the wheels of the carriage with his wand while putting a spell on it, and it began to spin faster than ever.

Lynn rushed inside the carriage and clung to the sides.

The wheels of the carriage made a rumbling sound as they spun, sending sparks flying through the city.

The chase between the carriage and Cerberus reached the bridge over the river that flowed through Alfredo.

Theo had reduced the load to the last possible moment, destroyed the parts of the carriage and boned it, but he still couldn't shake Cerberus.

Cerberus, on the other hand, was burning and absorbing everything around it, making its flames even more powerful and agile.

“Theo. There's nothing left to throw away. If we keep going like this, it'll catch up with us.”

“I'm sorry, but you need to get off too.”

On the way across the bridge, Theo pushed the coach driver and dropped him into the river.

A dull thud sounded and he sank into the river.

Theo then made the ring on his finger glow and drew a magic circle above the river.

“Fairy! Carry the water from the river, make it rise, turn it into droplets, and diffuse it!”

(My current fairy magic can't control large amounts of water. I can' t control a lot of water with my current fairy magic, but I can at least make it mist and increase the moisture.)

In response to Theo's spell, the fairies move the water from the river and produce a mist on the bridge.

However, it too is instantly vaporized and blown away by the flames raised by Cerberus.

“Ah, shit.”

The carriage raced over the cobblestone bridge, damaging everything in its path. Cerberus was right behind it, in hot pursuit.

The whole time they were crossing the bridge, Lynn could hear the floor of the carriage cracking and creaking and the wheels screeching.

While huddled in the carriage, he heard the shouting of the driver from behind.

"You stupid mages! You'll have to pay for my clothes too, you morons!"

Episode 69 – Lynn Removes His Beard

Lynn was on his way to Lorea's office when she called him.

“Dear Lynn.

I'd like to talk to you again in private.

 Please come to my office.

I'll be waiting for you with some delicious tea and sweets.

 Lorea.”

(I wonder what it is. To be called out like this)

The letter's vague and far-fetched phrasing gave Lynn a strange feeling of anticipation.

(At any rate, a gentleman shouldn't refuse an invitation from a lady, right?)

Today he wore the tailcoat, silk hat, and little mustache that he believed suited him best, and went out into the downtown area of Alfredo.

When Lynn arrived in front of her office, Lorea was waiting for him at the entrance.

She gave him an unusually bright smile.

“Lynn, I've been waiting for you. You must be tired after walking all the way here. Come on, let's go inside.”

 Lynn couldn't help but smile.

“Yes.”

But when they entered the parlor of the office and sat down on the sofa, what awaited them was not tea and snacks, but a mob of strong men who were her subordinates.

(Eh, what? I thought it was just the two of us.......)

When Lynn looked at her in confusion, the cheerful look on her face had completely disappeared and she looked bloodthirsty.

“Hey, Lynn. What's this all about?”

 Lorea showed him several documents.

They were a number of cease and desist letters from major clients.

Then there was the notice from the academy.

“Dear Lorea.

You have been out of school for a number of years.

There is no doubt that your enthusiasm for your studies has diminished.

It is also difficult to overlook your various activities that are disruptive to public morals.

Therefore, you are hereby expelled from this school.

Dean.”

Lynn's mind went blank.

“What do you know, Lynn? You know something, don't you? Say something.”

“No, I don't care what you say. I don't know the intentions of the major business associations or the head of the academy.......”

“I heard that all the big merchants are going to deal through Theo. I've been looking into it while I'm filing a complaint with the Dean, and it seems that Illywia is involved. Illywia is the royal family that loves you, isn't it? Don't tell me you haven't met her. You've been bragging a lot about your connections with Illywia.”

(Eh, what? I thought Illywia-san was supposed to make her move next week. And Theo said we can proceed with the settlement. I mean, what? Dean? I thought we only asked Illywia-san to put pressure on the major business associations. No way, did she send a letter to the Dean as well?)

“I'll never be able to enter the city, let alone rule Alfredo. Are you asking me to work in Renril's factory now?”

“…..”

“Hey. What is going on, Lynn? I thought you were on my side. Did you actually set me up? Hey, Lynn.”

“Well, did Theo mention anything to you, Lorea-san?”

“It's your job to keep in touch with Theo, isn't it?”

“Ah, I see. Yes, it is.”

(This is... maybe I have made a big mistake...)

At this point, Lynn finally realized that he had made a big mistake.

Lynn hurriedly tried to sort out the situation in his head.

(Hmm. That's what this is all about, isn't it? Theo had no intention of reconciling with Lorea-san in the first place. The fact that he told me that I could proceed with the reconciliation was just a way to buy time to get her to let her guard down. So what will be my role now?)

Lynn let his imagination run wild as to how he would appear to Lorea.

From Theo's point of view, he was a pawn to buy time by convincing her that he had no hostile intentions toward her until he could complete the siege against Lorea.

On the other hand, from Lorea's point of view, he was a person who disturbed her side by spreading false information that they were going to reconcile, even though they had no intention of doing so.

That means ......

(That would mean I'm a spy, right?)

And apparently the mission was accomplished.

(Now all I have to do is run. But ......)

I've been caught by Lorea's invitation.

(You're a bad person, Theo. If that was the case, why didn't he just explain it to me from the beginning? This makes me look like a fool. Illywia-san too. You didn't have to do anything so serious. There is no excuse for this. She is cruel despite her appearance.)

“Hey Lynn. What's going on? That's not what you said. You're on my side, aren't you? You are planning to turn me over to Theo and Ilywia. You aren't going to abandon me and betray me, are you? What is it? Hey, Lynn!”

“Hmm”

Lynn intertwined the fingers of his hands and played with them, staring at them and making a deep gesture of thinking.

Lorea and the others watched the scene with bated breath.

There was an awkward silence in the room for a while. The only sound in the quiet room was the ticking of the clock.

“Oh, yes.”

Suddenly, Lynn stood up as if he had an idea and spoke up.

Lorea and the others braced themselves.

“I had a tea party today. No, no, no. I almost forgot.”

Lynn flicked off his fake beard and placed it on the table.

“So that's why. I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to leave now.”

“Huh? What? Wait a minute.”

Lorea grabbed Lynn's arm to hold him back as he tried to leave.

“Let me go!”

Lynn said coldly and turned around.

Lorea was surprised when she saw the reproachful look in Lynn's eyes.

It makes her feel like she has hurt a naive boy, like she has done something she shouldn't have, and she flinches.

“I was really hoping to reconcile with Lorea-san. But as I told you before, I can't leave Theo. Please understand. Now then.”

Lynn shook off Lorea's hand when it relaxed for a moment and slunk away.

The room was once again filled with an awkward silence.

When she could no longer hear Lynn's footsteps, Lorea finally exploded in anger.

“Fufufu”

She let out a self-mocking laugh and swung her wand down on the table.

Her wand slammed into the fake beard that Lynn had just left behind.

The table made a rattling sound and broke in half.

The beard was blown to bits and disappeared without a trace.

“What the hell is that guy? Theo is just a guy with a bad personality. Lynn, he's just a scumbag, isn't he?”

She went down to the basement and began to chant a spell that would unleash Cerberus, ignoring the warnings of her subordinates.

“Enough about Theo. Kill Lynn. Kill that two-faced bastard.”

Cerberus was released from the cage and ran up the stairs with great force, blowing the office door open and running out.

“I felt sorry for him and took pity on him, but he betrayed me. He disrespected my feelings. I'll never forgive him.”

Episode 68 - Illywia Delivers the Hammer of Justice

Illywia was relaxing in the garden of her villa in Alfredo.

The garden was covered with a lake and surrounded by a lush forest.

The water in the lake was brought in by fairies, and the trees in the forest were seedlings planted in soil brought in from overseas and grown by magic.

Both the lake and the forest were home to the magical beasts she was researching.

It was a garden that could only be created if she had the financial resources to mobilize a large number of mages.

Her villa is located in the most sunny place in Alfredo from the sun stone.

Those who are in this garden can bathe in the brilliant light of the sun stone, listen to the quiet murmur of the lake, and rest their eyes in the gentle green of the forest.

Illywia was sitting at a table and chairs set up in the garden, elegantly passing the time by watching the magical beasts that occasionally appeared from the forest and lake.

As she was relaxing, she saw the people she had been waiting for arrive.

 It's Lynn and Theo.

 Illywia stood up.

“Hello, Lynn. Thank you for coming.”

“Thank you for inviting us to your villa. Lady Illywia.”

 Lynn bowed politely.

“It is a pleasure, Lynn. I'm glad to hear from you.”

Illywia was smiling, looking even happier than usual.

(Come to think of it, this is the first time I have ever contacted her.)

Lynn realized that it was always her who had invited him to meet her.

“Is this the person over there? You said in your letter that you wanted to introduce to me.”

Illywia looked at Theo and said.

“Yes. I'd like to introduce you to Theo, my classmate from the academy and co-owner of the company. Actually, he has something he would like to discuss with you, Lady Illywia.......”

“I'm Theo Garfield. I would like to thank you for your generous response to my sudden request.”

Theo also bowed, following Lynn's example.

“No need for formal greetings. There is no need to be mindful of one's status outside. This is the Mage Tower. This is not the Kingdom of Wyngarde. You and I are mages of the same academy. We are equals. There are no other Wyngardeans here besides the Duke, so there is no need to be reserved. Please treat me as such.”

She showed the same friendly, undivided attitude that Illywia had for everyone.

“That's not possible. The reason I want to speak to you today is not because I want to speak to you as an individual, but because I want to speak to you as the royal family of Wyngarde.”

“Hmm. I see.”

A momentary look of sadness and melancholy appears on Illywia's face, and she shuts her eyes for a moment, her previously soft and friendly expression disappearing. Instead, a cold and dignified expression clings to her face.

Lynn was startled by the change in her mood.

“Then let's hear it. Theo-san, the mage. Kneel down and begin to speak.”

“Huh?”

Theo knelt with one foot and one hand on the ground and hung his head.

Lynn was taken aback by the interaction between the two.

The garden of the villa was now as quiet as if it had been hit by water in the face of Illywia's majesty.

The birds had stopped chirping, and even the magical beasts that lurked in the woods and lakes had ceased their activities and disappeared as if dead.

Lynn was unsure if he should imitate Theo or not.

He looked over at Duke and saw that he was guiding Lynn with his hand.

You don't have to do this, he seemed to be saying.

Theo began to speak with his head down.

“I'm here today to ask you something. I would like to ask you something. The people from the major merchant associations that Lady Illywia and the royal family of Wyngarde are close friends with. Do you know of a person named Lorea that they are doing business with in Alfredo?”

"Lorea? No, I don't know that person. What's the matter?”

“Actually, there's a complication with her business.......”

Theo complained about how exorbitant the tax levied by Lorea was, how it was impoverishing the merchants of Alfredo, and how it was hindering the education of mages with limited resources. How justifiable their dealings were.

“All merchants in Alfredo suffer from her tyranny and rampage. She is the enemy of free commerce. We can't even run our businesses in peace with her. The larger merchant houses can withstand Lorea's tax collection. However, the small and medium-sized merchants are suffering from Lorea's tax collection. Moreover, these exploitation is not based on venerable authority, but on violence and intimidation. Her actions are truly vicious, outrageous, and cruel. This distorted state of affairs, if left unchecked, will undermine the trust of the world's most respected mage tower. Already her rule has distorted market principles, causing poverty, uneven distribution of wealth, and economic stagnation. And all of this is being done just to satisfy her own self-interest.”

Theo was determined to appeal not for his own benefit, but for the public good. And in doing so, he did not forget to speak as if he was representing the interests of all the merchants.

“We are not saying this for our own personal gain. We just want to do something about this unfair situation. This absurd taxation must of course be affecting our exports. If we can get rid of the taxation, then the magic tools exported to the Kingdom of Wyngarde, as well as all other countries in the world, will be traded at a proper price.”

Illywia nodded in agreement deeply several times as she listened to Theo.

“I see. Theo-san. I understand what you're saying. If there is a connection between such a person and the royal merchants, it would be a matter of prestige for the royal family of Wyngarde. It cannot be overlooked. I'll put the necessary pressure on the major merchant associations from my side.”

“Thank you. All the merchants of Alfredo are grateful for your mercy and fairness, and we will never forget this favor.”

The two of them then discussed the details and agreed that they would put pressure on the major merchant associations early next week.

Lynn tilted his head as he listened to the exchange between Theo and Illywia.

(Huh? I thought you were going to reconcile with Lorea-san?)

Lynn wondered, but thought that Theo must have his own ideas, so he didn't say anything at that moment.

“Now”

Illywia claps her hands.

The next moment her face, it was back to its usual harmonious and friendly expression.

“I guess that's the end of our difficult conversation. Now let's make some tea.”

The tense air was completely gone and Lynn felt his body relax.

“Now, standing like that is tiring. Sit down, both of you.”

She said, and Duke waved his wand.

With a whoosh of wind, two chairs appeared out of nowhere and were added around the table.

Just in time, the waiter brought a kettle and some snacks.

On the way back from Illywia's villa, Lynn couldn't resist asking Theo a question.

“Hey, Theo.”

“Hmm, what?”

“Are you sure you want to proceed with the reconciliation with Lorea?”

“Yes. I do.”

(Yeah? What you're saying and what you're doing seem to be the opposite...)

Lynn wondered, but didn't dare to say anything.

(Well, Theo is a smart guy. I'm sure he has a good solution. Anyway, all I can do is work on the settlement.)

Illywia was alone in her room as usual, and then she summoned her spirit.

“Sylph. Tell me what this Theo kid is really thinking.”

Sylph did as told and gave Ilywia an earful.

“Mm-hmm. I see. I'm sure he's planning to use me as a public figure to get rid of his own enemies. Hmmm. He is quite a clever boy, isn't he? Well, this is a problem that the royal family can't overlook. I'll let him use me. It's also a good excuse to work for Lynn.”

“Dear Major Commercial Association

Do you know how the Lorea Tax Collector's Office, where your suppliers and wholesalers pay their taxes, is raking in the profits?

I can't let this scandalous situation go unchecked.

From now on, the royal family of Wyngarde will no longer do business with any merchant company that uses elevators controlled by the Lorea Tax Collection Office to make sales.

 Illywia Rim Wyngarde.”

(Hmm. I guess that should be it.)

Illywia finished writing a letter in her room and took a breath.

(I hadn't realized it until that Theo kid told me about it. Such blatant exploitation of the middleman was going on. However, I guess that can't be helped. The royalty and nobility rarely go down to Renril. The difference in status and the structure of the tower were cleverly exploited.)

As she paused for a moment to think, Duke came into the room.

“You wanted to see me? Illywia-sama.”

“Duke. Please deliver this letter to all the major merchant houses that do business with the royal family of Wyngarde.”

“Major merchant houses? Isn't the time for an audience with the merchants still a long way off?”

“No, this is a different matter. It's about the Lorea Tax Collector's Office.......”

“Oh, you mean the girl who got in through the back door?”

“What? Backdoor entry?”

“It's an open fact among those of us in the association that she entered the academy through a backdoor method. In addition, she can't keep up with her studies and can't graduate, so she has no choice but to stay at the academy year after year, and she's cozying up to the association to line her pockets. To us, she is like a bone stuck in our throat.”

“Hmm. So, there were such situations.”

(Then let's put some pressure on the Director about that as well.)

“Dear Director.

Do you know a woman named Lorea who is enrolled in the academy?

Not only did she enter the academy through a backdoor entrance, but she has no intention of graduating and has been staying only to do evil business in Alfredo.

What does the head of the school think about having such a student in the school?

As the royal family of Wyngarde, who donates a large amount of money to the academy, we can't help but feel that this will have a negative impact on the other students, disrupt public morals, worsen the security of Alfredo, and bring down the authority of the academy.

I hope that the Dean will immediately take appropriate action against her.

 Illywia Rim Wyngarde”

(That's it. The less specific you are in your instructions, the more they will do things on their own.)

Illywia read the letter over and over again, then suddenly paused as she was about to send it out.

(Theo said by next week, but we should do it a little earlier. The sooner the better.)

“Duke. Please arrange for this letter to be delivered today.”

Illywia sipped her tea, satisfied with her work.

(This is good. I'm sure Lynn will be very pleased.)
