Episode 57 - A Conversation Between Two People

“Lady Illywia. Thank you for inviting me.”

“I'm glad you're here, Lynn.”

Illywia patted her chest as if relieved.

“Good. I heard that you went home early the other day. I was wondering if I had offended you in any way.”

Apparently that was how Duke had reported it to Illywia.

Lynn glanced at Duke's face, who was standing behind her.

As usual, his chiseled face was unfazed.

Lynn decided to save him face and went along with the story.

“Offended? No way. I would have liked to have been there more, but I had some plans. I was going to say goodbye to Lady Illywia, but I missed my chance. I apologize.”

“Oh, no, no worries. I'll be able to talk to you again anyway.”

“Lady Illywia?”

Yuwen intervenes between Lynn and Illywia.

“Oh, Miss Yuwen. You also came, I see.”

“Yes. You remembered me, didn't you?”

Yuwen said, sounding thrilled.

“Yes, of course. Yuwen-san is an acquaintance of Lynn's. And she's so pretty. The entire royal family of Wyngarde must treat her with respect.”

“You don't have to address me as "san". Please feel free to call me Yuwen.”

As soon as Yuwen sensed the change in the way people looked at her, she felt good and tried to get into Ilywia's good graces.

She seemed to be aiming to show the people around her that she was her friend.

She smiled affectionately, lining up her compliments and approaching her hand.

Yuwen spoke as if she was trying to steal Illywia away from Lynn.

Illywia responded in a friendly manner without showing any displeasure.

The two of them didn't even look like close sisters.

In fact, Yuwen seemed to want to be in that position.

While Yuwen and Illywia were chatting, Lynn was idle.

My gaze suddenly fell on Duke, who was following behind her.

He had a grim look on his face.

Lynn decided to talk to Duke.

“Um, Mr. Duke?”

“What is it?”

The Duke replied in a rude manner.

I would like to thank Lady Illywia for the clothes, do you know of anything she might want or be in need of?

“....... Do you still think that you are equal to Lady Illywia?”

“Well, I'm not really a servant of Lady Illywia.”

Lynn said bluntly.

Duke looked startled.

Lynn continued without a care in the world.

“In the past, Lady Illywia told me that I needed to know myself and what I could give to others. Since that day, I've been searching for what I can give to Lady Illywia, but I can't seem to find it.”

Duke had a difficult look on his face for a while, but then he let out a lonely laugh.

“There's nothing you can do for Lady Illywia. She has nothing that needs to be replaced by others. She was born with everything.”

Duke gets a distant look in his eyes.

“As a matter of fact, she doesn't even need me to guard her. She can take care of herself, you know.”

“That's not true.....I'm sure Lady Illywia is counting on Mr. Duke to help her out.”

“I appreciate you saying so. But I know better than anyone that it's not true.”

Duke smiled as if he had given up.

“No offense, but don't try to be of service to people you can't reach, but try to be useful to people who really need you. If you don't, it will be your own downfall. Chasing after what you can't have won't do you any good.”

With that, Duke turned his back on Lynn and walked away. He seemed to have stopped keeping an eye on Lynn. There was a hint of sadness in his back.

The music on the floor changed and people began to dance socially.

Lynn was allowed to sit next to Illywia and watched the floor.

The two of them sat in the upper section of the room, where it was easier to watch the dancing.

The Sylphs, spirits of the wind, drifted around the two of them.

The wise participants moved away from Lynn and Illywia so as not to look at them.

They knew that the appearance of the Sylph was a sign that Illywia wanted to keep people away and talk in private.

If they approached her now, they might offend Illywia.

Sylph cast a spell on the air around them to prevent their conversation from leaking out.

They were able to enjoy their conversation without being overheard.

“Finally, we can talk amongst ourselves.”

"Yes, I didn't realize how hard it would be to talk to Lady Illywia.

“Yes, we are like the princess and the boy. Like Orihime and Hikoboshi. We are in love with each other, but the world separates us and we only see each other once a year. Oh, what a tragedy.”

Lynn chuckled.

As always, he had no idea how to really say it.

“Your friend, Yuwen, is a charming and friendly girl, isn’t she?”

Illywia said as she watched Yuwen dancing on the floor.

Now, Yuwen has been approached by a young man of high rank and is dancing with him in a good mood.

Apparently, Illywia liked Yuwen as well.

“Eh, yeah. Well, that's right.”

(Although her attitude changes 180 degrees depending on the person.)

Lynn sipped his tea, blurting it out in his mind.

“You've learned to drink tea.”

“Yes, the first time I drank it, I was baffled by the bitterness, but once you get used to it, it's addictive.”

“Fufu. You've matured a bit.”

Illywia flashed her characteristic mischievous smile again.

“How do you like it? After attending these tea parties and interacting with senior nobles. Did you make any connections that might be useful in the future?”

Lynn turned over, blushing as if embarrassed.

“No, I can't really talk about it in any detail. Everyone seems to be wary of me. It's like they're trying to figure out whether they'll gain or lose by associating with me......”

“Have you noticed? People are motivated by interests. Especially the people here are senior nobles and royalty with complicated interests. They are not people you can promise anything too lightly. In order for you to build a relationship with them, you need to show them a great deal of benefit and gain their trust.”

“Trust.......”

“If you want to be trusted as a mage, you need to have some achievements. In order to do so, it will not be enough to achieve excellent grades at the academy. You must graduate from the academy and achieve remarkable results on the top 100 floors of the tower and above.”

“Do I have to go above the 100th floor?”

“Yes, you're right. There is a limit to how much you can do as a mage while you are a student at the academy. In order to operate outside the tower as a mage, you have to go above the 100th level.”

Lynn thought about it for a moment.

(100 floors huh? Then I guess I'll have to take paid classes.)

“Lady Illywia. Thank you very much. Now that I've listened to you, I think I can see my path a little better.”

“Fufu. You're one wiser person now.”

“Yes. I learned a lot.”

While replying to that, Lynn felt uncomfortable.

(Senior nobles and royalty will not act without interest and trust.)

But ...... Illywia-san does a lot of things for me without interest.  I'm sure there's no benefit in working with me. (So why......?)

Lynn thought about it, but didn't want to put it into words.

Having said that, I felt like I would never be able to see her like this again.

“Did you like the outfit?”

Illywia said, looking at Lynn's red garment.

“I knew that outfit would look good on you. I've been thinking about it a lot, trying to decide on the right outfit for you.”

Lynn's clothes were covered in a subtle crimson pattern.

The clothes were constantly undulating and ripples were spreading.

The ripples move slower than the waves rolling against the sea, expressing the grandeur of nature and the leisurely passage of time.

Lynn had no idea what this pattern represented.

I can barely tell it's Earth, but I've never seen Earth with such a surface.

“Thank you very much for lending me these clothes, they are beautifully patterned.”

“Isn't it?  It's a representation of the desert.”

“Desert?”

“It's a land of only sand and rocks that absorbs water everywhere. A harsh land where no plants or animals can live. It's also a place where mages who have committed crimes in the tower are banished.”

Lynn felt a chill run down his spine just listening to the explanation.

“It's a scary place, isn't it?”

“Yes, it's still a beautiful place. They say that when the sun sets over the Alib desert, it turns into an indescribable crimson. That's what the outfit is meant to represent.”

Duke, like the other participants, was sitting at a distance, watching Lynn and Illywia.

I see. He's a boy with a few strange traits. He's just the kind of boy that Illywia cares about. (Although, ......)

Duke looks at Lynn with pity.

(I'm also troubled by Illywia's playfulness. She's going to throw you away as soon as she gets tired of you anyway.)

Episode 41 - The Second Mabudachi

I'm a golem.

Having successfully killing the Dragon, I stood there. Reflecting the light coming down from the ceiling. That should be a very cool sight! Oh, but if I'm standing in direct sunlight like this, I might be too bright, reflecting too much light.

Hikaru, the self-proclaimed Spirit King, who speaks in a fishy Kansai dialect.

He's not a bad guy. In fact, he's quite a nice guy. Just being able to have a conversation with me is an incredible thing. But I think I should listen to Hikaru's story with half an open mind. Because the evil dragon was not that big of a deal. It sank easily against my Line-light.

I knew he was being a bit over the top. Devouring the entire planet is quite a feat. In a game, it would be on the level of the last boss. My story has just begun, and there's no reason for such a strong enemy to appear so early on. Hikaru uses the Kansai dialect, so I think he was trying to appeal to the audience by saying too much. After all, he calls himself the Spirit King. He's a bit of a show-off.

Although I may think such things, I do not say them out loud.

Oops, Hikaru can also read minds, so I'd better stop thinking about that. The white cube seemed to be a very important thing, so I felt responsible for destroying it. I think it’s the sign of me becoming a responsible person.

BTW, the thing that protected Hikaru was just a pile of line-lights stacked like a log cabin with increased power. I thought it’s not a special magic. I was wrong. Line-light is a special rare magic and I'm a Line-light specialist.

Hikaru is staring at me dumbfoundedly.

What is it? Was it a bad idea to make a big hole in the ceiling by any chance? It was my first time using Line-light in a real battle, and I was so excited. I think I may have overdone it. However, I should not show such weakness here. I have to be strong and level-headed and say that there is no problem and that it is natural.

{Log: The Golem has dealt a total of 280,000 damage to the Evil Dragon}

{Log: The Evil Dragon has died}

{Log: Golem is now lvl 28}

Oh, I just got the log. 280,000 damage is not bad. That's the most damage I've ever dealt. However, this damage is just the total, so each shot must have done somewhere around 300 damage. I thought it would be cool, so I kept hitting him with nearly a thousand of those!

My level instantly rose to 28. It seems that the evil dragon was quite strong. The damage was also 280,000, I feel a certain connection to the number 28 for this one.

{You have gained the titleSlaughtered Thing}

{As a result of gaining the title Slaughtered Thing, you have gained the skillSlaughterer}

What the hell is that!? Slaughterer!!? Give me a break! There are lot of useful skills in this world too, you know. I think when my opponents see the skill Slaughterer, they will cringe more than when they do on Be Stupid 】・・・・・・.

{Log: The effects of [enlightened one] have relieved my depression}

Well, it can't be helped. I've already got it, so what can I do? Titles cannot be casually acquired and released. Once you've earned it, you have to deal with it in a positive manner.

I walked up to Hikaru. I wonder how long Hikaru is going to stand there dumbfoundedly.

"Hey, Hikaru. How long are you going to stand there? The evil dragon has been killed. Isn't that what you wanted?"

"Uh, yeah. That's good, but... Who the hell are you?"

Oh, I think I can finally say that line.

"I am The Golem!”

I finally said it! It was transmitted. It was worthwhile to make myself a first person. The character building process continues slowly and steadily from a small place. I was moved by the words I could finally say.

“?  Well, anyone can tell that if they look at you once.”

What a surprise, it was not the answer Hikaru was looking for. I’m nothing but a golem. Maybe he wants to know my race.

"I don't know about you, but my name is Golem. My race is the Metal Golem. I'm nothing more than that.”

Hikaru's face becomes very subtle. He looks a little unconvinced.

“? I'm not sure what Hikaru is thinking.”

“What a coincidence, I can’t understand what you are thinking either. Like how can someone has such an insane existence to confront the Evil Dragon and defeat it so easily.”

“Well, you've now learned a thing or two, Hikaru. Good for you.”

・・・・・・ Well, that's enough. Thank you, Golem. You really saved my life. I was prepared to die, but now that I'm alive, it must not be a dream or an illusion. Thank you so much.”

Hikaru then bows his head deeply. I gently place my hand on Hikaru's shoulder and make him raise his head.

“Don't worry about it, it's just between me and you. If someone is in trouble in front of you, it's only natural to help them.”

“Golem, you..”

Hikaru is getting a little nervous. I guess my cool comment touched Hikaru's heart... Fufufu. Don't be shy. It's okay to cry when you want to cry.

{You have gained the title Tomodachi of the Spirit}

{As a result of gaining the titleTomodachi of the Spirit, you have gained the skillHidden}

Oh, I've earned the title of "Tomodachi". Now Hikaru and I are friends according to the voices of the world! Let’s go!

{Log: Your friendship with the Spirit King of Light has exceeded 30}

{Log: You have exceeded the specified value, and are now registered as a Mabudachi (True Friend)}

{Log: The effect of the titleTomodachi of the Spiritis activated. You can now telepathically communicate with the Spirit King of Light}

In addition, I was registered as a Mabudachi. He's the second Mabudachi in this world! Now I can even use telepathy! I've been able to communicate with Hikaru without any problems, so it's not like anything is going to change.

However, the voice of the world said that he was the Spirit King of Light. Seriously, Hikaru is the Spirit King? I think I'll ask him just to be sure. I'm a little nervous. Is he really the king?

“Hey, Hikaru. Are you really the Spirit King? Like are you really and truly the Spirit King of Light?”

"'...ah, yeah, right. I'm the Spirit King of Light. But, well, the Spirit King is nothing compared to your power."

What a surprise, he wasn't a self-proclaimed King, but a real one. Maybe I was a little too casual with him. I wonder if I should just say, "...haha, so you are the Spirit King..."  and bow down. However, I think I should not treat him like this. Because we are friends!

"Well, I'm sorry I called you names."

"It’s okay, don’t worry about it. I'm not that impressive compared to you.

"Well, that's true.

"..... you can be a little more sensitive about it."

So he is the King who can tell others whether to worry about something or not. Anyways, This whole time I've been trying out skills on my own or figuring them out from the names, but with Hikaru being able to communicate with me, I can ask him about my newly acquired skills. Let's ask him.

“I have one question for you, Hikaru, do you know anything about the skillHidden? If you do, I'd like to know about it.”

“The skill that we fairies usually use is called "Hidden". As the name suggests, it's a skill that hides your appearance. However, it doesn't work on those with a clean heart. If you have a clean heart, you can see us as we are. So if you can see me as I am, then you have a clean heart, right?”

Fufufu... My heart is clean, huh? My heart is as clear as A ball of Ramune.

(TN- Ramune is a carbonated soft drink in Japan which has a round crystal like marble ball in the neck of the bottle.)

“What is A ball?”

Hikaru butted in. Being able to read minds is a useful thing. But I'm kind of glad that we're communicating! Oh right, this is it! I thought about explaining about it, but it was too much trouble to explain about Ramune, so let's change the subject.

“So, Hikaru, what are you going to do now?”

“Wai? Wai will go back to the spirit world, because I know the other spirits are worried about me. I want to reassure them as soon as possible.”

“I see, you're leaving. I'm sorry to see you go, but if you need anything else, let me know. Don't try to throw away your life as easily as you did this time.”

“Oh, thank you. Normally, I would say that to someone, but this time, it's the opposite.”

“um, right.”

Hikaru smiles a little and holds out his hand to me. I grasped his hand firmly and shook it back.

“If you ever go to the spirit world, just think of me. I'll give you a special tour of the spirit world. See you later.”

“See you later, Hikaru.”

With that, Hikaru returned to the spirit world. I was left alone in the hole. Hikaru seemed to be able to fly, so I should have asked him to carry me to the top of the hole. I missed the chance.

I looked up at the ceiling and shook my head from side to side, thinking that. After that, rock climbing became a bit more fun, and it was two weeks after I slaughtered the Evil Dragon that I left my hole.

 Episode 56: Desert-colored clothing

A few days after the Royal Tea Party, I again received an invitation from Illywia for next month's tea party.

There were two tickets in the package.

It seemed that she remembered Yuwen properly.

In the letter, she wrote as follows:

The next time will be a tea party that is smaller and has a calmer atmosphere than before.

Therefore, you can talk to me more calmly.

You were lost.

I didn't want to have to go through that misery again.

But now that I was determined to reach the upper floors of the tower, I felt that I shouldn't be frightened by such things.

The tower was advantageous to the aristocracy. The connection with Illywia would definitely give him an advantage in his quest.

If he refused the invitation once, there was no guarantee that he would be invited again.

It was indeed a shame to have to part ways with Ilywia in such a way.

Lynn was troubled.

(At least if I can manage to get some clothes.)

So Lynn decided to write a letter as follows.

“Thank you for the invitation to the party.

 I'm very happy.

However, when I attended the party before, I thought that our clothes were not appropriate for the place. I think we'll look a little out of place. Yuwen and I don't have the money or the means to buy the kind of magical clothes that royalty and high nobility wear.

So, I know it's unreasonable to ask, but can you lend us some clothes that we can wear to the event? I know it is a selfish request. Of course, in return, I will do whatever I can to help you. If you can't, please pretend you didn't hear about this request. I will give up my participation this time and participate another time. Thank you very much.”

(Something like this.)

Lynn puts the letter in a seal and writes the address of Illywia in magical language and casts a spell to summon the fairy.

(Well, it's okay. The huntsman uncle told me that it's not a bad thing to rely on others and receive charity when you're in trouble. I'm sure Ms. Illywia will understand. If she refuses, the relationship will be broken anyway. I have nothing to lose.)

"Fairy. Send this envelope to its destination."

The envelope turned into a blue flame and flew to the 90th level, Alfrud Prime.

After sending the letter, Lynn felt an intense sense of disgust.

He felt as if he was doing something ridiculous.

Since sending the letter, Lynn had been restless in everything he did. Whether he was at the academy or at work, he was constantly thinking about the letter he had sent to Illywia, which made him feel restless.

What would Illywia think of me? Would she see me as a shallow beggar and despise me?

Lynn was most unsettled by the lack of news. If this was the end of her relationship with Illywia, then so be it.

The hardest part was that he had to wait until he heard back from her. I wanted to come to a decision quickly and settle down.

A few days later, a letter and a parcel arrived from Illywia. Lynn cut the seal of the letter with fear.

"Dear Lynn.

I don't think it's a selfish request. I would be happy to prepare costumes for you and Miss Yuwen. Please don't worry about returning the money. If you have any problems, please feel free to ask me anything. There will be no reservation between you and me.

 From your friend, Illywia.”

Lynn opened the package attached to the envelope and found a fine red imam's uniform inside. As soon as he saw it, he slumped down on the bed and relaxed.

For the past few days, he had been worried that Illywia would give him the evil eye.

(Illywia is a really nice person.)

She is a born royal and noble. Giving charity to the lowly is as natural as a mother giving milk to her newborn.

The dark feelings that people like Lynn have towards the upper class are never visible.

Her compassionate charity is like the light of the stars in the night sky, raining down equally on everyone, regardless of their status.

"So. Did you make the princess pay for your clothes?"

 Theo said in disgust.

"No. I only borrowed them."

Lynn said as he prepared to attend the tea party in his room.

He stuffed his ticket and the clothes Illywia had sent him into his bag so he wouldn't forget.

"You can say that, but ...... you."

 Theo sighed.

"Are you sure you still want to go to the Royal Tea Party in Wyngarde?"

"Of course. I've been to the last one and found out. I know from the last time I was there that Ms. Illywia has a tremendous influence. I'm sure I'll benefit from getting to know her in order to get to the upper levels of the tower."

"It's just... it smells kind of fishy to me."

"Fishy?"

"Don't you think it's too good to be true? I can't believe you are suddenly being treated so well by a princess. It's one thing to be invited to a tea party, but to have your clothes arranged for you?"

"Miss Illywia is a good person."

"No, I don't think she's a bad person either, just......"

Theo slurred his words unusually. It seemed even he himself couldn't pinpoint the source of his discomfort.

"Well, anyway. I guess there's nothing scarier than free stuff.”

"It's okay. You're such a worrywart, Theo.”

"You're bold in a strange way, you know.”

"That's a terrible thing to say. Oops. It's time to go out. I'm off.”

Lynn was about to leave, but Theo followed him out the door and insisted.

"Look. The royal family is a nest of conspiracies. A bad comment can be fatal. Try to keep your conversation as casual as possible. If the topic of money and politics comes up, give a vague answer to muddle the waters. If someone is pushy, reject them outright. Don't get too involved."

Lynn felt that the people at the party were looking at him differently than before.

In the past, the moment their eyes met, they would look at him with a questioning stare, but this time, when Lynn greeted them, they would smile back.

Lynn tried smiling at the girl who had run away when he approached her before.

She looked embarrassed, but smiled back at him.

 Lynn chuckled.

He wondered if she would remember him.

He realized that clothing is the most basic unit of identification.

Yuwen was swimming around the hall like a fish out of water.

She was a beauty in her own right, and as long as she was dressed well, she was as gorgeous as the children of a high class aristocrat.

She was wearing a rose-colored dress that represented double petals, just like a real rose.

As she walked, the petals scattered and came into alignment again, repeating endlessly.

Whenever she passed in front of me, everyone turned to look at her and admired her charm.

Yuwen also began to inspect the upper class nobles and began to make eyes at the men who seemed to be influential.

As Illywia had said, the party was smaller and had a more relaxed atmosphere than last time.

The floor was filled with soothing music.

The people attending the party were not wearing as much glitter as last time, and their expressions were more relaxed. They seemed to be not only of good family background, but also of relaxed personalities and smart people.

They didn't hurry to get into Illywia's business and burn with jealousy.

However, it seemed difficult to form a close relationship with them.

When Lynn spoke to them, they responded pleasantly.

But it was a step backwards.

They seemed to already know Lynn's background.

As much as possible, they avoided topics related to Lynn's birth and upbringing, and chose topics that would be less offensive.

They were very careful not to go too far into each other's affairs, even though they considered Lynn to be Illywia's favorite.

Lynn, too, was sensitive to the mood of the moment and showed a natural adaptability.

In order to be able to have a casual conversation with them, he tried to emphasize the businessman aspect of himself.

"I've recently started a business association with a friend. We've devised a way to purchase goods at low prices. We're planning to be officially recognized by the Mage Association."

"Really? A trade association?"

"How on earth do you procure goods at such low prices?"

"I can't give you the details, but I've found a way to legally purchase goods without taxation."

"You must be very clever."

"So you were invited to the Royal Tea Ceremony because of your talent."

"No, I met Lady Illywia when I was a member of Magrillheim."

"You were a member of Magrillheim?"

"You seem to have a bright future."

"Oh, no. It's nothing. I was only invited once by chance. The quotas in Magrillheim are very high. You're supposed to hunt monsters in the Yellow Zone while in the Blue Zone. ......"

"Hahaha, that's terrible."

"Hmm. You're good at jokes, aren't you?"

Lynn continued his rambling conversation. People started to talk to him.

Yuwen saw this and was inwardly impressed.

(This guy is surprisingly clever.)

As Lynn was making small talk with the senior nobles, he heard people murmuring.

He looked towards the buzzing and saw that Illywia was walking towards him.

She was wearing a deep blue dress and had an enigmatic smile on her face.
