Leveling Murderer - Chapter 22

 Episode 22: Breakfast

“Um~...... my head hurts.”

Hosoya-san, who was sitting across the table from me, muttered while holding her head.

Hosoya-san had fallen asleep drunk last night and stayed at my house without bothering in the slightest to wake up.

“Please eat your breakfast quick. We will be late for work.”

I took a bite of my toast, not caring about Hosoya-san.

If I'm late, I don't know what the managing director will say.

“Breakfast is just bread and milk? Don't you have a salad or a smoothie or something?”

“You should be grateful that I prepared it for you. It's alright, you don't have to force yourself to eat it if you don't want to.”

“I'm hungover and cold....... Aah~, I liked the gentle Onizuka-kun before than the current Onizuka-kun.”

“That's mutual. I liked Hosoya-san better when she was still wearing a cat before she tried to kill me.”

(TN: ‘wear a cat’ is a Japanese slang where it means to pretend as if he/she were meek and mild.)

At that time, I was in love with her.

“Hey, can I borrow your hair dryer later?”

Hosoya-san sipped a glass of milk while brushing up her morning hair.

“Yeah that’s fine... ah yes, I wanted to ask you yesterday, what other spells can you use, Hosoya-san?”

Now that we've made an alliance, I want to know what my companion is capable of.

Then Hosoya-san looked at me with a face like a peashooter.

“What do you mean, 'other'?”

“I mean spells other than the one for detecting murderers. If you're level six, you probably know a few of them.”

I'm level four and I've mastered three spells.

“I only have that one.”

“Oh, just one?”

“Is it different from Onitsuka-kun?”

“Ah..Well, I have a few.”

“Eh,what? That's not fair!”

I thought a level 6 would know at least one or two useful spells, but I didn't expect for her to have only a spell to detect a murderer.

So that's the only advantage of joining forces with her.

Hosoya-san dipped a toast into the milk and while eating it she looked exhausted.

“Hosoya-san, how have you been able to live all this time? How have you killed so many people?”

“That's easy. I used the same poison that I put in the chocolate I gave to Onizuka-kun, and mixed it into homemade cookies. I pretended to be fond of them, and everyone ate them without question.”

She speaks proudly.

From the sounds of it, all the people she killed were probably men.

“How did you choose your targets?”

“Randomly on a dating app.”

“What do you mean by random? ...... You killed innocent people?”

“I had no choice. It was like a do or die situation.”

Hosoya-san said the same thing I was thinking.

“Then how did you get the poison?”

I wondered if it was possible for an ordinary office worker to obtain poison so easily.

The next moment, an unexpected name came out of Hosoya-san's mouth.

“A child named Akira gave it to me.”

!?

“Eh!? You mean Akira Ishigami?”

“That’s right. Have you also met Akira-chan by any chance, Onizuka-kun?”

“Yes”

This child is like a sort of benefactor who taught me about murderers.

“The day after I killed my first person, Akira-chan came to me and taught me many things. I'm still alive today because of Akira.”

Hosoya-san speaks with a distant look in her eyes.

Akira, you've been doing similar things to other murderers besides me.

I still don't understand what she's thinking.

“Do you have Akira-chan's cell phone number? I wanted to thank her, but I forgot to ask her. So ......”

The hangover tension from earlier had been replaced by Hosoya-san's lively voice, as if she were a fish that had just gotten into water.

I was surprised to hear Akira's name mentioned, but as far as I can tell, she doesn't seem to know more about Akira than I do.

If that's the case, there's nothing more to ask.

“I will get back to that but first, I think it's wrong to kill innocent people. Do you not feel guilty about that?”

“I'm not sure what you mean by that....... You can't help it if you don't do it you'll die!”

Perhaps it was because I dismissed Akira's topic, or perhaps it was because I blamed her for killing innocent people, but Hosoya-san raised her voice.

“So, hypothetically speaking, if you knew who the bad guys are, what would you do?”

“......what do you mean?”

I revealed to Hosoya-san that there was such a thing as a spell for detecting bad people and that I had this spell in hand.

I didn't want to expose all of my spells, so I explained without mentioning the recovery spell and the antidote spell, and Hosoya-san listened intently to me from the very beginning.

“...... I see. Well, with that spell, you can target and kill only the bad guys.”

“Yes. It would save a lot of remorse and help purify society.”

“That's good. Then I'll give you the information on the murderers, and you can give me the information on the bad guys. If I'm going to kill someone, I'd feel better if it's a bad guy.”

“Okay, I understand. Then let's work together to make things right.”

I held out my right hand in front of me.

In response, Hosoya-san also held out her right hand.

I grabbed Hosoya-san's hand, who was a size smaller than me, and held it tightly.

“Then—”

Ping pong~

Just as I was about to say one of my witty lines, I heard the doorbell ring.

“Hmm? Who is it this early in the morning?”

“Ah, Hosoya-san.......”

Hosoya-san let go of my hand, stood up quickly, approached the front door, and opened it without hesitation as if it were her own house.

“Good mor--... eh..ehhh!?”

“What? Who are you?”

“Hey Hosoya-san, don't answer the door without permission....... Ah, Misa-chan!”

When I pushed Hosoya-san away, standing there was Misa in her school uniform, holding a pot in both hands and blinking her big eyes.
