Leveling Murderer - Chapter 8

 Episode 8 - Convenience Store

On my way home from work, I was walking along a dark street at night when I saw a girl in a school uniform, probably a high school girl, walking ahead of me, illuminated by the light from a night lamp.

The time is 7:00 pm.

“Isn't it scary alone ... so late?”

I was worried about the girl who I had nothing to do with.

“Even for a guy like me, it's a little creepy.......”

The girl walking in front of me glanced back at me as if she had noticed my footsteps.

Then she quickly turned around and started to walk faster.

Huh?

Could it be that I'm being flagged ......?

I didn't mean to offend her at all, it was just that we happened to be going in the same direction, but maybe she thought I was suspicious because I was wearing a mask.

I slowed down a bit and distanced myself from the girl.

After a while, the girl disappeared from my view.

I made sure no one was around.

“...... if I don't find and kill a bad guy in the next six days.......”

I muttered to myself in the dark.

A murderer must kill someone within a week or he will die.

If Akira's words were true, I only had six days left to live.

The only way to find out for sure is through my own death, so I have no choice but to kill.

I can't kill a good person, so if I had to do it, it would be a bad person.

With this in mind, I spent the day observing others as I walked around the city, but I couldn't find anyone so evil that they deserved to die.

I noticed a man walking around smoking a cigarette, and a young man sitting on a senior seat in the train, but they were not really the kind of bad people that deserved to be killed.

“What should I do ...”

As I was thinking about it, I found myself in front of a convenience store near my apartment.

I paused my thoughts and walked into the convenience store as if lured by the bright lights to get my lunch.

And then...

“What? What the hell?”

A girl standing in line at the cash register shouted out when she saw me.

“...... Eh? Me?”

“Yes, that's right. Y-You were following me, weren't you?”

When I looked closely at the face of the frightened girl, I saw that she was Misa, the daughter of Shimizu-san who lived next door.

“No, no, wait a minute. It's a misunderstanding. It's me, Onizuka, who lives next door.”

I hurriedly took off my mask and pointed to my face to explain to Misa-chan.

I don't want to be treated like a pervert in front of other customers.

“We met once when you were moving in, and it was just a coincidence that we ended up in this convenience store.”

“Oh, Onizuka-san ......?”

Misa rolled her eyes and then collapsed to the floor as if her whole body had lost its strength.

“You're Onizuka-san right...... I thought you were a pervert.......”

“Miss, are you okay? Do you want me to call the police?”

A male clerk came running up to Misa.

The way the clerk and the other customers looked at me was like they were looking at a suspicious person.

Give me a break...... I'm a regular customer at this convenience store.

“Oh, I'm sorry, it's okay. I'm sorry for shouting out, it was my mistake, I'm sorry.”

Misa sat down on the floor and bowed her head to the people around her.

“This is someone I know, so it's fine.”

“Oh, I see......”

Misa-chan told the clerk, and then the clerk went back inside the checkout counter with an expression that was neither convinced nor unconvinced.

The customers finally stopped looking at me suspiciously after hearing Misa-chan's explanation.

“Here, can you stand?”

It seems that I'm partly responsible for this situation, so I hold out my hand to Misa-chan.

“Oh, sorry .......”

Misa grabbed my hand and stood up slowly.

And.

“I'm sorry about earlier. I was so surprised.”

She bowed her head deeply.

“It's my fault for wearing the mask, though I'm the one who's more surprised.”

I almost ended up in trouble with the police as a pervert.

It would have been too pathetic to be caught for molestation when something like murder wasn't caught.

“I'm really really sorry.”

“No, it's okay now.”

Misa continued to lower her head to the point that I felt terrible, so I decided to change the subject.

“By the way, you went to the aquarium yesterday, did you have fun?”

“Oh, yes. You heard it from my mother, right? I really enjoyed the aquarium.”

“Yes. Did you enjoy the dolphin show?”

“Yes. The rain had stopped, so I was able to watch it with my mother.”

“I see. That's great.”

As if the gloomy expression on her face from earlier had been a lie, Misa looked up at me with sparkling eyes when I mentioned the aquarium.

She looks like she's solid on the outside, but on the inside she's probably more childish than I thought.

I felt that way as I watched Misa talking innocently.
