Episode 9: Justice for All
After we finished shopping at the convenience store, Misa and I decided to go home together since we share the same building.
“Do you always come home this late, Misa-chan?”
“Yes, I do. I study for exams at the library every day.”
“I see, you're in the second year of high school....... College entrance exams, that brings back memories.”
“...... I was actually thinking of working after high school, but...”
Misa begins to speak in a slightly low tone.
“We're a single parent family and I didn't want to bother my mom.......”
“Hmm...”
I didn't know how to respond, so I just let out a hmm.
“But when my mom found out about it, she scolded me for not going to college.......”
“Well, I think parents tend to be like that.”
I don't have any experience as a parent, but I say the right things.
“That's why I'm studying so hard for the exam.”
“I see....... But don't stay too late at the library, it's dangerous.”
“That's what my mom told me too.”
Misa narrowed her eyes and smiled happily.
“Onizuka-san, do you always buy lunch from a convenience store?”
Misa-chan asks, glancing at the plastic bag I'm holding.
“Well, yeah. It's close and convenient.”
In fact, I've been eating lunch at a convenience store.
“Don't you cook for yourself?”
“I'm a man living alone, so it's more convenient for me to buy packed lunches.”
“Hmm, I see…”
“I get Misa-chan's mother to give me side dishes once in a while, though.”
“Yes, I know. If I was as good a cook as my mother, I could make lunch boxes for Onizuka-san.”
“You're not a good cook?”
“No, not at all.”
Misa shrugged her shoulders.
“Hahaha ...... and what about you, Misa? What did you buy?”
“Me?”
After I asked the question, I felt sorry that I had asked something so unnecessary.
Asking a high school girl what she bought at a convenience store is not a very nice thing to do.
But Misa-chan...
“I bought this.”
While I was regretting asking her that question, She took a pen out of the plastic bag so proudly that it was ridiculous.
“A pen?”
“Yes, it's a ballpoint pen. This ballpoint pen is very easy to write with, and I don't get tired at all.”
“Eh, I see.”
“Ah, you seem disappointed.”
“No, not at all.”
I was just out of sync.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“You know, Onizuka-san--”
Ding, ding, ding!
As we were talking in the dark, the bell of a bicycle was rung from behind her.
As I turned around, I saw a businessman-looking fellow in a suit riding his bicycle past Misa-chan with a whoosh of wind.
“Kya~”
“uh-oh…”
I caught Misa in my arms as she lost her balance.
“Are you okay?”
“Ah, yes. Sorry.”
“That was Dangerous”
As I stared at the bike as it went past.
“But maybe it was our fault.......”
Misa said.
“What? Why? No matter how you look at it, it was the other person’s fault.”
“We were walking side by side on the road, and that man might have been trying to warn us that we could get hit by a car, that it was dangerous, so he drove like that.”
Misa had a unique interpretation.
“Hmm, I don't know. I think he was just frustrated. It's not so that bad to walk side by side on a road where there are no cars going by.”
I say that, but then I reconsider if there are other ways of thinking like Misa's.......
From the perspective of the man from earlier, maybe he's the righteous one and we're the evil ones.
I see.
