Leveling Murderer - Chapter 33

 Episode 33: Yamazaki Saburo

I decided to investigate Saburo Yamazaki on my own.

Based on the information I had, I went to the B-Mart near my office to look for a man who was about 170 centimeters tall, had all black hair, glasses, and wore a suit.

I was expecting it to take a few weeks, but I found the man much sooner than I expected.

A man in a suit, about my height, with black hair pulled back in an all-back style and wearing glasses, stood in line at the cash register with an emotionless face.

He didn't respond to my spell to detect bad guys.

But even so, I can tell.

My sixth sense told me that he was Saburo Yamazaki.

I kept my eyes on him, keeping my distance so as not to get too close.

“Hey, Yamato.”

I heard a voice calling me from behind.

I was startled and turned around to see Saeki standing right behind me.

“Sa-Saeki!?”

I wondered how long he had been there.

I was paying attention to Saburo Yamazaki, so I didn't notice him at all.

I kept my composure.

“Are you shopping too, Saeki?”

I ask.

“I'm here for the same reason you are.”

Saeki replies.

“Same as me? What does that mean?”

“Don't play dumb with me. I've been following you after work because you've been acting like you don't know anything lately. I know you've been hiding in the shadows every day, acting like you're looking for someone.”

“......?!”

I was at a loss for words.

For the past few days, Saeki has been following me.......

“I finally understand your purpose now....... That's Yamazaki Saburo. Right?”

Saeki stares at me with a serious face.

I can't lie to Saeki, who is my colleague and best friend, and who has just lost his girlfriend, Hosoya-san.

“...... Yeah, maybe.”

“I don't care why you were looking for him in this store. I don't care if there was something going on between you and Kazumi-san. So if you know, please answer me this. Did that man kill Kazumi?”

He asked in a low voice.

“Yeah, that's what I think.”

“...... I knew it.”

Saeki let out a small "phew" in response to my words.

Then he looked at Saburo Yamazaki with eyes that seemed to have made up his mind about something.

“Hey, Saeki. You're not going to do anything about that guy, are you? It's dangerous, so don't do it. He might be a murderer.”

A serial killer, to be exact.

If that's the case, he's even tougher than a regular killer.

We don't even know how many levels he has or what spells he has.

“I know, I know. I'm not stupid. I'm not going to just grab him by the chest and punch him out. I'm just going to mark him from a distance like this, get evidence of the murder, and take it to the police.”

I wanted to tell Saeki the truth, but then I would have to tell him that I was a murderer.

So, I kept my mouth shut.

Saeki and I just watch Saburo Yamazaki's back as he leaves the B-mart after finishing his shopping.

“You, too, stay away from that guy.”

Saeki spoke up after Saburo Yamazaki's back was completely out of sight.

“Yeah.”

You don't have to tell me that.

I just feel more comfortable now that I know his face. That's the only reason I was doing what I was doing.

I'm sorry Hosoya-san, but I have no intention of taking revenge for you.

“Saeki, make sure you don't have any more contact than you have today.”

“Yeah, I know. Don't worry, you are like my mother.”

Saeki looked at me and smiled.

Relieved by his smile, I parted ways with Saeki.

The next day, however, Saeki disappeared.
