Episode 68 - The Gate to Hades

I am Golem.

After listening to the monk, I am on my way to the door to Hades. It seems that the door to Hades is located at the bottom of a mountain surrounded by a deep forest.

I didn't know the way to get there, so one of the little monks from the temple came along to show me the way. Surprisingly, many of them wanted to come with me, saying, “Silver Jizo-sama, take me.” Perhaps they thought it would be safer to stay by my side. However, if there were too many of them, they would slow me down, so I asked only one of the little monks to come with me.

As it was going to take about a week, I was wondering how the little monk was going to eat during that time, but the monk handed him a scroll and a wooden handprint. It seems that with this scroll, he can call out things from a distance. It's a useful item. After wrapping the rice balls and a few days' worth of dried rice in a package, the little monk's preparations were complete.

Seeing off the monks, I and the little monk headed for the door to Hades. It would take a long time if we walked normally, so I decided to carry the little monk with me. I ran lightly so as not to stress the little monk.

The little monk seemed to be enjoying himself. It's not often you get to experience speed like this. You should enjoy it as much as you can.

After a while, he got bored and quieted down. Well, it's not so surprising once you get used to it. It can't be helped.

All the wandering corpses and ghosts that I found while trying to reach the door to Hades were sent back to the other side each time. At first, I stopped and prayed, but there were so many that I decided to constantly pray as I moved forward.

I managed to reach the entrance of the sea of trees in about two days.

I gestured to the little monk and asked him what he wanted to do and if he wanted to wait for me. The little monk shook his head and said, “No, I'll follow you! Please don't leave me here like this!” with teary eyes. With that, I went along with the little monk and went deeper into the sea of trees.

There were more wandering corpses and ghosts in the sea of trees than ever before. I kept my hands clasped together at all times, and didn't forget to use my halo light as well, and headed for the entrance to Hades while praying. The little monk clung tightly behind me and spoke to me.

The little monk clung tightly to my back and spoke to me, “Well, you are indeed the Silver Jizo. If it wasn't for you, we would never have gotten this far.

“Chuu-chuu!”

Boss is amazing!)

Jispo replied with pride, but of course the little monk didn't get the message.

We finally made it through the sea of trees and reached the foot of the mountain.

There was a large gap in the rock face and the depth of the mountain could not be determined. The wandering corpses and ghosts kept appearing, so I guessed that the door to Hades was just ahead. However, there was purple smoke drifting in the air, as if it were miasma.

(TN - Miasma was considered to be a poisonous vapor or mist filled with particles from decomposed matter (miasmata) that caused illnesses)

I thought it would be a bad idea to take the little monk and Jispo with me from here, so I told them to stay behind. However, they didn't listen to me.

“Please don't leave me here like this! I'm going to die!”

“Chuchuchu-chuu!”

(Yes, yes, that's right!)

Shaking their heads, they cried out for me not to leave them here. I don't know what to do. I wish there was something that could prevent the miasma. Oh, that's right. Let's try using a barrier.

I created a 3-meter-long wall of light around me. I walked over to the side of the purple smoke to test it out, and found that the smoke didn't come inside the wall. Hmm... I think I can manage with this.

With Jispo and the little monk in tow, I made my way deeper into the rocky rift. Since the little boy was following me and it was too dark with just the faint light of the barrier, I generated a line light. With both hands clasped and with prayer, we pushed deeper and deeper.

“We're pretty deep in, aren't we?”

I nodded in response to the little monk's question. The purple smoke around us made it difficult to see. But as I continued forward, I heard a voice shouting at us.

“Come on! Keep moving! The door to Hades has been opened! Turn the living into the dead! Turn this world into the other world! Come on! Go, go, go!”

“That's it! This is an opportunity of a lifetime! The foolish inhabitants of this world have opened the door to Hades! We must take this opportunity to devour them all!”

“Yes, Master! Let there be suffering for all! Let them taste all this pain, hatred and suffering!”

There were three large ones, about ten meters long, completely different from the other corpses and ghosts, one of which was a large beast with horns on its skull. In both hands were large swords.

Next was a monster with an elephant-like head, four arms, and four legs. This guy has two huge clubs. Sometimes he stomps his foot, but every time he does, a vibration occurs.

The last one is a lady with rotten skin wearing a kimono. One of her eyes seems to have been blown out. She was holding a sickle in one hand and screaming hysterically in a high-pitched voice.

It seems that those three are actively sending wandering corpses and ghosts back to this world. I see, so I'll pray to those three to please go home. In addition, I'll use the line light to physically eliminate them. I don't want to mess with them half-heartedly and have them fight back later.

“Oh, my God! This is not good! Jizo, they rule the land of Hades...”

The light of the line lights and prayers enveloped the three monsters.

{Log: Golem has dealt an average of 860 damage to the generals of Hades}.

{Log: General Gashas Skull has turned to dust and ascended to heaven}

{Log: General Demon Elephant has turned to dust and ascended to the heavens}

{Log: General Greed has turned to dust and ascended to the heavens}

Well, I looked back at the little monk. The little monk was saying something to me, maybe I heard wrong.

The little monk's eyes were wide open and he was frozen in disbelief. I gestured to the little boy and asked him if something was wrong. He gulped and replied.

“N, no, it's nothing.”

If you don't have anything important to say, you can say it later. Don't shout when attempting a preemptive strike. You don't want the other side to notice you.

Now, all the wandering corpses, ghosts, and fireballs around me were gone after my earlier prayer. Now all I had to do was close the huge door in front of me.

“Silver Jizo, how do we close this huge door?”

I turned my head to the little boy and tilted my head. How do I close it?

I wondered if there was any other way than to push it shut. Maybe I could recite a spell. For now, I'll just push it.

I walked up to one of the open doors and pushed it shut with both hands. There was a loud bang, and the door closed. Oh, I knew all I had to do was push the door shut.

I moved to the other door, and pushed it shut with both hands. There was a loud creaking sound, and the door to Hades slammed shut. This was the end of the mission to close the door to Hades. The purple smoke around me was gone. Hmm, there's something on the ground, should I pick it up? I picked it up and tossed it into my pouch.

As I looked up at the huge door to Hades, I wondered if it would be a problem if it opened again.

Well, the door in front of me seems to be made of black metal, so why don't I use my line light to weld it and prevent it from opening?

Oh, I will try to be careful with the power.

Jiijii. Oh, it's melting. “Wow, it's so bright!” said the little monk. I gestured to him to keep his eyes closed and continued to work carefully. If I make a mistake and break it, that will be a problem.

Jiji ji, jiji ji. Jiii. Jiii. Ji-Jiii.

Oh, it's done. I think it turned out pretty well. It looks a little messy, though. For a first time, it went pretty well. I nodded in agreement with myself.

The little monk, whose eyes had finally returned to normal, muttered in disbelief, “The door to Hades is .......”

Perhaps it was a bad idea to prevent it from opening. I was just trying to provide a little service. I guess it was none of my business.

.......

I can't help it.

I tell Jispo and the little monk to step back from the door to Hades.

“Is here okay?” The little monk shouted, but I told him to go further and further down. We're a long way off. Oh, we're all right now.

I punched the wall of the rocky path leading to the door to Hades as hard as I could. Don! With a rattle, the rocks come crashing down. I quickly run to the others to avoid getting caught.

I looked back and saw that the door to Hades was completely obscured by the collapsed rocks.

OK, OK, I nodded in satisfaction. Now no one can reach the door to Hades. Fufufu, no one will notice that I have melted the door to Hades with heat.

Now that the door to Hades is closed, I'm done. With that, I put Jispo in my pouch and headed back down the same road that led to the door to Hades, accompanied by little monk.

 Episode 67 - Thank You

I am a golem.

Yes, I am a golem, not a Jizo.

(TN: Jizo are statues made out of stone, which is said to have a spiritual power for protection and longevity that predates Buddhist beliefs.)

I was led into the largest hall of the temple and was seated on a thick cushion in front of a statue of Buddha.

Sitting across from me is a one-horned monk in a purple kimono. And behind him sits hundreds of members of the demon tribe. They all put their hands together to worship me. The monk and the other demons all look exhausted.

“Thank you, thank you.”

“The Silver Jizo is here.”

“Buddha had not abandoned us.”

“I can still hear that terrifying loud thumping sound.”

“I saw it from up in the trees! The silver Jizo had a divine light on his back, and when he put his hands together and worshipped, all the evil spirits around him disappeared in an instant!”

“Yes, I saw it too! I thought it was all going to be over, but I was saved.”

“It's night and everything was bright!”

“The monk is right. The Buddha saved us.”

“I'm so grateful.”

“Thank you very much.”

The people of the demon tribe worshipped me with gratitude and appreciation. In front of me, a person who looked like a little priest of a temple was continuously bringing me offerings.

“Chuu!”

(Can I eat that?)

I shoved Jispo back into the pouch to shut him up.

“Look at that bag full of out-of-this-world patterns.”

“That must be the noble bag of Jizo's world.”

“Hmm. Something we don't understand, but it must be wonderful.”

“Oh, to have the chance to see something like that with my own eyes, I shall live a long time.”

“Thank you.”

“I'm very grateful.”

!? I'm not sure if the pouch is a pattern that is out of this world? It's the first time I've been complimented for my oblique understanding of what it is! No, it seems to be a compliment, but it is not a compliment.

I was more shocked than the fact that they called me the Silver Jizo.

{Log: The effects of [Enlightened One] have resolved the shock state}

The monk chastised the demon tribe members who were making a fuss.

“Keep it down, you'll embarrass the Silver Jizo!”

With a single word, the commotion subsided. The monk put his hands in front of him, bowed deeply, and thanked me.

“Thank you very much, Silver Jizo. If you had not saved us, we would have been killed by the evil spirits. Thank you very much once again for saving us.”

As if to match the monk, the demon tribe members behind him also bowed deeply and expressed their gratitude.

I had used a line light to create a halo, but I never thought I would be worshipped this much. Hmm, I'm scared of myself! But my efforts were not misdirected. The production of the halo had given me a sense of divinity!

Seeing that the monk and the demons had raised their heads, I used gestures to ask them why they were in this situation. The monk managed to understand and answer me.

“It is believed that the disturbance was caused by the opening of the portal to Hades.”

What do you mean? I tilted my head. The monk wrinkled his brow and continued with an expression as if he was chewing on a bitter bug.

“The door to Hades has been opened, and the inhabitants of Hades must have flooded into the world. They are trying to drag us, the living, into the land of Hades. They don't move very fast, and if there are only a few of them, they won't be able to reach us as long as we keep our doors locked and stay inside.”

I see. That's why they locked the doors in the villages and nobody came out.

“But when they gather in large numbers, their movements change. They break down the doors of houses, come in and attack the living. Therefore, all the people in the surrounding villages would gather at this temple to escape the danger. If we chant the sutras, they will not be able to enter the temple.”

So, the wandering corpses weren't doing the gate banging and wall banging because they wanted more chanting. After all, it was the right decision to help the temple people, as I suspected. Hmmm.

“At first, the lords sent out soldiers to try and defeat them, but they soon retreated. The inhabitants of Hades would not fall even if you cut them, and their cuts would turn into deformed forms. Swords and spears are ineffective against the flying spirits of the dead. I heard that magic was able to inflict a few hand wounds, but there were too many of them.”

I listened to the monk's story and agreed with him.

“Just as we were about to give up on ourselves after being pursued by the inhabitants of Hades, the Silver Jizo appeared and saved us.”

I see. After listening to the monk's story, I had a thought.

I wondered if Obon had anything to do with it.

What am I to make of my past thoughts? I had been thinking a lot. As it turned out, I was right in what I had done so far. But it had nothing to do with my ancestors. If I had known that premise, I wouldn't have joined the corpses.

At that moment, for the first time, all the pieces fell into place in my mind. I think I've finally arrived at the truth of the case!

Oh, yeah! In other words, this is what the old man from the guild wanted me to do! It wasn't like Obon in the other world is excessive.

The detective Golem is sharp as ever today.

I was lost in thought when the monk put his hands and head on the floor and asked me to do something. All the other demons, seeing this, also put their hands and heads on the floor at the same time.

“Silver Jizo-sama! Can you please close the door to Hades? As long as the door to Hades is open, this commotion will not stop. We can offer-”

I stood up and gently placed my hand on the monk's shoulder, making him look up. Interrupting the monk in mid-sentence, I nodded strongly in understanding.

The monk then put his hands and head on the floor longer than before, and muttered in a tearful voice, “Thank you, thank you, thank you.

At any rate, I gestured for everyone in the temple to take a good rest today, as they all seemed to be tired. They must have been very tired, and the presence of the silver Jizo must have reassured them. The demons soon fell asleep.

Anyway, I wish they would stop calling me “Silver Jizo”.

 Episode 66 - The Temple

"Chuchu-chuu! Chu! Chu!”

(Geez! Boss! My nose is about to burst! There are so many dead bodies wandering around!)

Well, I don’t think it is that bad for me as compared to Jispo, but I think my nose is going to burst from this smell too. I don't have a nose, though.

There are wandering corpses and ghosts as far as the eye can see in this wide meadow. There are also some bodies that aren't wandering, but they have weapons or are wearing armor, so they might be the remains of a battlefield.

The non-wandering corpses have maggots on them. And some of the wandering corpses are eating them. It's scary to look at them because they are moving so slowly.

Hmm, what chaos.

There is one with torn arms and spider-like legs, and another with a demon's head attached to the body of a snake. What the hell is this?

Oh, he fell, that corpse! The impact of the fall caused his leg to be ripped off. Geez. Gross.

Hmm? Octopus-like legs sprouted from the wound on the broken leg. The broken leg is now moving like an octopus' leg.

Okay, I get it. When a wandering corpse's body is torn, the torn part is transformed into a demon or a deformed form. Apparently, the non-wandering corpses that were eaten started to move. How horrible. It's like hell, isn't it?

There are no dead bodies or ghosts attacking me, but it's still not good for my mental health.

I clasped my hands together. The halo line light also emerged. And then I shot out vertical line lights all over the grassland, with almost no power. Finally, I prayed for the souls of the dead.

{Log: The golem has done an average of 400 damage to the zombies and ghosts.}

{Log: The zombies have turned to dust and ascended to heaven}

{Log: The ghosts have ascended to heaven}

Whew, this eases the hellish scene in front of me. But the uneaten corpse are still there. I feel a little sorry for them, rotting away in this grassland with maggots. Some of the bereaved families might want to pick up the bones, but only in the wake of the wandering corpses and ghosts.

I clasped my hands together again and released a line light with enough power to make the corpse disappear. The corpses disappeared from the wide grassland.

Namu Amida Butsu. I hope you will be able to attain enlightenment.

The further I walked, the more wandering corpses and ghosts I saw. I carefully sent them all to the other side.

This is the result of people forgetting about the Obon Festival.

I'm in trouble because I forgot to give thanks to my ancestors. I guess I should have made a proper offering to them.

After a short walk, I saw a temple-like building on top of a small mountain. The area around it was filled with wandering corpses and ghosts. It was night, so there were many fireballs flickering around. The wandering corpses were pounding on the gate, as if they wanted to enter the temple. The rest of the corpses are pounding on the temple walls. The ghosts are trying to climb over the wall to get into the temple, but something seems to be blocking their way.

From inside the temple, I can hear what sounds like someone chanting prayers.

Oh, right!?

I thought the wandering corpses and ghosts wanted to enter the temple, or sleep in the grave, but no! They are angry because the chanting is not enough!

If you think about it that way and look at this situation, it makes sense.

More! More! More! Let us hear more chants! It's not touching our souls like this! Let us hear more soulful sutras! Chant sutras with enough passion to make us become enlightened! That's what this is all about!

That's why everyone is urging each other with gate and wall banging. You guys are really fabulous!

What passionate hearts these corpses and ghosts have! Even when you're dead, you still have that burning passion in your hearts! How cool! Very cool! I wish I could live like that!

{Log: The effects of the [Enlightened One] have calmed my excitement}

Well, they're dead. Okay, I'll support them. I'll join the corpses in urging them to chant enough sutras to satisfy them.

I stomp my foot down to match the thumping sound of the wandering corpses. The thumping of the corpses and the thumping of my feet grew louder and louder.

Don! Don! Don! Don! Don! Don! Don! Don!

As if in response to our demand, the chanting coming from inside the temple became louder and louder. Good, keep up the good work! I'm sure your chanting will reach the hearts of the corpses and ghosts!

But the corpses are greedy.

They're still not satisfied. They want more and more! I couldn't hide my amazement.

The voices coming from inside the temple are not only chanting, but also shouting. "Stop it!", "Save me!", it's like screaming! If it were me, I would have thought that it's time to leave, but since we were all demons, we were being harsh with them.

I understand.

We are urging you because we believe in you. The thumping sound of the corpses is filled with such wishes!

That's right, my actions are not with the other person in mind. If I really think about them, I should demand them strictly like the corpses. That's what will bring out the power of those in the temple!

All right, I'll don with you!

Don! Don! Don! Don! Don! Don! Don! Don!

The chanting and screams heat up accordingly. Yes, that is exactly what the corpses and ghosts must be looking for!

"Chuu-chuu. Chuchu?"

(Hey, boss. Are you not going to help?)

Jispo pokes his head out of his pouch and asks me a question. I tilted my head. What do you mean, "help"? Aren't I helping corpses and ghosts by stomping my feet in time with them? What are you talking about? This hamster.

"Chuchu, chu, chu chuchu."

(I mean, I think, no, I think everyone thinks that the temple is being attacked by those corpses and ghosts.)

Hmm? What do you mean?

Oh, I guess you could say that's one way to look at it. I was looking at the situation from the corpses' point of view. But from the perspective of the people in the temple, it looks like dead bodies and ghosts are attacking them. I guess you have to look at things from both sides to understand.

I took the time to observe the temple and its surroundings.

Well, it looks like Jispo's opinion is right this time. There are some men climbing up a big tree by the wall, crying and sprinkling some kind of salt.

I was a little mistaken, wasn't I? I've been careless.

Now that I have realized my mistake, I must immediately correct my behavior. I am a golem who can immediately adjust his behavior!

I clasp my hands together and generate a halo of line light. I then create a vertical line light around the temple, praying for the souls of the wandering corpses and ghosts.

{Log: The golem has dealt an average of 400 damage to the zombies, ghosts, and fireballs}

{Log: The zombies have turned to dust and ascended to heaven}

{Log: The ghosts have ascended to heaven}

{Log: The fireballs have ascended to heaven}

Namu Amida Butsu. I will never forget the beat that I made with you. Please rest in peace.

Oh, one of the men who was up in the tree was startled and fell. Is he okay?

 Episode 65 - Encounter with Evil Spirit

I am a golem.

Finally, dawn has come. The morning sun is dazzling. I wondered if the fireballs would appear again when I passed through the village, but it seemed that they wouldn't if I activated [Hide]. I felt a little sad, so I turned off [Hide], and the fireball came out to light up my path. Thank you, fireball. And now that night has fallen, it disappeared as if its role was over.

They appear before I know it, and when their role is done, they quickly disappear. I was a little impressed by such fireballs. That's what a true professional looks like. That's cool!

I continue along the path. There are no demons or bandits in sight. I wonder what's going on in this island country.

As I continued on my way wondering, a member of the demon tribe appeared on the road ahead of me. Oh, I've found the first villager. I have to activate Hide before he finds me. But something doesn't look right. He looks like he's wandering aimlessly.

Hmmm, is he feeling sick?

I was a little worried, so I approached him without activating [Hide].

Oh, this one is definitely not in good shape, or perhaps even dead? It looks like it's rotting in some places, and some of its bones are visible. One of his eyeballs was missing.

Oh, I see. I get it. It is indeed a fantasy world. It's the Obon of this world. On Obon, the dead really do come back!

(TN- Obon is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the spirits of one's ancestors.)

If that is the case, then I can understand the circumstances behind the corpse wandering in front of me. What a lonely and sad conclusion.

When he came back to this world for the Obon festival, he found that his house was already gone and his family and descendants were gone. So, it was not ready for him to return to the other world, but he had no home to stay in, so he had to wander around.

What a lonely wandering corpse. At the very least, I will pray for your soul. Rest in peace.

A soft light enveloped the wandering corpse in front of me. Then the wandering corpse disappears from the edges of its body!

{Log: The golem has dealt 400 damage to the zombie}.

{Log: The zombie turned to dust and ascended to the heavens}

< Thank you >

Oh, no. My God. It's gone. My prayer was an offensive skill. But it sounded grateful, so I must have done something good. I'm sure he wanted to get back to the other side as soon as possible. Rest well in the afterlife.

After that, the more I walked, the more I encountered wandering corpses. Some of them were ghosts like Sebastian, who did not have a physical body. They were quite a bit more transparent ghosts than Sebastian, though.

I guess the society of the demon tribe is becoming more nuclear family-oriented. Otherwise, there wouldn't be so many dead bodies and ghosts wandering around. The passage of time is cruel to those who are left behind.

Whenever I encountered such corpses and ghosts, I offered prayers and let them go back to the other world. On the way, I thought it would be better to keep the ambience in mind, so I generated a line light on my back and did not forget to produce a halo.

{Log: Golem dealt 400 damage to Ghost}

{Log: The ghost turned to dust and ascended to the heavens}

I chant “Namo Amida Butsu” in my mind, and clasp my hands together to send it off.

“Chuchu-chu-chu! Ch-ch-ch-choo!”

(It's so bright! Boss is glowing!)

Jispo wakes up from his nap, looks dazzled, and dives deep into the pouch. He's probably going to sleep again. He's really enjoying his life with three meals, a snack and naps.

As I continued on my way, I saw a village. Oh, I don't see a lot of ...... villagers. All the figures I could see were either wandering corpses or ghosts.

Unlike the road I had just taken, the corpses and ghosts were in groups. The houses are all over the place, but I wonder if they didn't let them in. Maybe they abandoned taking care of the corpses and ghosts. If it's a ghost, it's just a little scary, but with a dead body, there's the smell and everything. I can't help but understand that feeling. The custom of Obon is also changing rapidly.

If that were true, it would be the monk's job, but it can't be helped. This is where the monk Golem comes in.

I shine my powerless line light on the corpses and ghosts as if it were light from heaven. Then I say a prayer. As the corpses and ghosts disappear, I turn off the line light as well. Of course, I don't forget to create a halo from behind me.

{Log: The golem has dealt an average of 400 damage to the zombies and ghosts}.

{Log: The zombies turned to dust and ascended to the heavens}

{Log: The ghosts have ascended to heaven}

< Finally, Can, Get, Sleep, Thank >

I sent all the corpses and ghosts to the other world. I left the village, thinking that I should become a Buddha.

There was no one outside the house except the corpses and ghosts. The houses were tightly closed, and I wondered if it was a custom not to leave the house during Obon.

Jispo was doing his daily routine of polishing my body. Recently, he seems to have become able to brush my body freely while I walk. He seems to have grown up before I knew it.

“Chuu-chuu-chuu!”

(Oh, boss, please keep picking those berries!)

He's still as impudent as ever, though.

After the golem left the village, the doors of the houses finally began to open. Then, the villagers gathered out of their houses, forming a circle around the village chief.

“I can't believe it.”

“No matter how hard we tried to cut them with our swords or thrust them with our spears, we couldn't do anything.”

“Even the lord's soldiers were so overwhelmed that they withdrew at last.”

“Yeah, the Lord abandoned us.”

“Well, it seems that Buddha has not abandoned us.”

“Thank God.”

“The Buddha must have provided us with the Silver Monk.”

“We should be grateful to Buddha.”

“ Now this village might be safe.”

“Indeed, we had no where to run to.”

The villagers quietly bowed their heads, clasping their hands in the direction the golem had gone.
